Cocoa Beach Parade Marching Band Dec. 8, 2007

The Cocoa Beach Parade Marching Band participation was a great success today! The students did a wonderful job playing and marching.

Thank you to all the parents that helped make today extra special. Rick Hester, Dale Mosher and Dale Vicos worked hard preparing signs, golf cart flags and trailer.

Don Cohan was our band room chaperone whle the students suited up and got their instruments. Then Don ran down last minute items we needed to complete our preparations for the parade. Ladena McCracken and Lorena Spensley walked with the band and handed out candy.

Here is a video taken of our wonderful “percussion” team. I feel they are the “heart beat” of our band.

Please click here for a special Marching Band video holiday card: http://www.youtube.com/greeting_view?s=4hWNnSzZkd0&p=C85730C9838C2710

Sound Waves

BPS-TV announces the premiere of “Sound Waves”, the new TV program that spotlights student musical performances taped earlier this year during the Music Performance Assessment concerts. There are twenty 60 minute episodes that begin airing on Thursday November 1st at 4:00 pm each weekday through the end of the month. Shows that air on Monday and Tuesday are repeated on the following Saturday starting at 6:00 pm and the shows from Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will repeat on the following Sunday starting at 4:00 pm.

In December a similar schedule will be followed so there are several chances to see and record the show that includes your school. The 2007 season of Sound Waves will also be scheduled on BPS-TV during 2008, but on a less frequent basis.

Here are some web page links that give you additional information: For general information about the show:http://www.bpstv.com/soundwaves/ For a list of schools and which episode (show number) they appear in:http://www.bpstv.com/sw_a-z.htm Visit the above page first to find your show number then visit this page for a list of showtimes for both November and December:http://www.bpstv.com/sw_nov-dec.htm In addition, we will air a Sound Waves marathon over the Thanksgiving holiday. Shows 701 to 710 will air on Thursday November 22 and shows 711 to 720 will air on Friday November 23. The marathon begins at 11:00 am on both days. We will repeat the marathon on Christmas Eve and Christmas.

PLEASE NOTE: Show times are subject to change due to school board meetings or other emergency programming.

Two questions that you, your students or parents may have:

Q. Can I get a DVD of the show that my school appeared in?A. By the end of the year we plan to distribute three DVDs to school principals of each show that their school appeared in. Unfortunately we cannot make more DVD copies because of budget reasons and we also cannot sell DVDs because of copyright reasons. Please encourage your students, parents and staff to record the show off BPS-TV either at home or at school.

Q. Will the 2008 MPA’s be filmed?A. At this time we do not have funds to film the 2008 MPA’s.

Cocoa Beach Parade Dec 8, 2007

The Cocoa Beach Parade is on Saturday December the 8th, 2007.

We are to pick up our instruments and flags and put on our uniform in the band room from 12:00pm -1:00pm. Students are responsible for transporting their own instruments and flags to this event.

We will meet at the Cocoa Beach Library at 1pm under the covered walk way.

The parade starts at 2pm and we should be finished between 3-3:30pm. Parents should pick up their students at the Library and bring them back to the band room to drop off their instruments and their uniform. All uniforms must be turned in on Saturday as we must prepare them for the cleaners.

As an added holiday treat this year - the students voted to wear Santa Hats at the parade on Saturday. What fun!! Please help your child find a suitable Santa hat for the parade, nothing fancy. I just thought that we could use a little extra fun in this parade!

Band News week of Dec 3, 2007

Hello Band Families,

I'm sure you have all heard about the sad passing of one of our CBHS students, Rafe Maccarone. Details about Rafe and his service schedule for Friday evening and Saturday morning and online guestbook information can be viewed here: http://www.beckmanwilliamson.com/view_obit.php?id=0

This Thursday's Varsity Soccer game (6 pm) vs Cocoa will be dedicated to Rafe. Also, next Thursday's home game with Merritt Island HS will be dedicated to Rafe. As a resident of Merritt Island, Rafe knew and played soccer with many Merritt Island HS students. Please dress warmly (red colors are requested) and support Rafe's and his teammate's vision that the stands would be full at Soccer games.

This Saturday's Cocoa Beach parade involvement by the CBHS Marching Band and other school groups is still on. Rafe's family chose the early morning service to help insure that parade commitment that Mr. Cool and CBHS made to our town of Cocoa Beach can be kept to participate in the annual parade. Just as we will continue to support Soccer, please support the decision to move forward with our involvement with the community even at this sad time.

Congratulations to Mrs. Claudia Davis for being selected as Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High School's Volunteer of the Year !!

Claudia Davis

Mrs. Davis has been a volunteer for the band program for the last four years here at Cocoa Beach. She has volunteered countless hours yearly through heading up concession committees, volunteer committees, dances, concert dress, uniform fittings, community parades, chaperoning, etc. and is currently heading up the Band Boosters blog spot on the internet and maintaining the band boosters website. She was also voted by the band parents as the Band Treasurer for the band and over sees thousands of dollars annually in fundraising and student fees for the program coordinating with Mr. Brooker and the schools bookkeeper. She is the mother of Chuck Morris a Baritone saxophonist in the marching band, Wind Ensemble and Jazz band.

She is representing all of the band volunteers who put in so many hours in support of the band and our school. This is the third straight year that a band parent has been the volunteer of the year. Band parents put in more volunteer hours than any other group.

Color / Winter Guard announcements

Dear Color Guard Parents,

I would first like to thank Mrs. Vicos for the wonderful flower flags she hand painted for us. They are the white flower flags we use during the first song of the marching band show. They are beautiful and very unique and original. On behalf of all the color guard members and me we say a big "Thank You"

We will be having a Winter Guard Informational meeting on October 30th at 6:00 p.m. We will discuss costs and pass out the calendar of events.

On October 27th all color guard members are invited to attend the traditional Pizza Hut lunch before the big FBA marching band festival. We will meet at the Pizza Hut located 179 E. Cocoa Bch Cswy. At 12:00 p.m. Everyone please bring $8.00 for pizza buffet and soda. This is a wonderful time to spend away from the school to take a moment to bond as a team and get fired up before the big event.

Please feel free to contact me at letstwirl@bellsouth.net if you have any questions or concerns.

Instructions for All-County Band Auditions Tuesday, November 6th , 2007
Audition Instructions for Directors and Students
1) Registration will take place in the commons area of Kennedy Middle School.
2) All students must check in at the registration table and receive their audition numbers, instructions, etc. Teachers should provide to registration a list of any students who will not be auditioning.
3) Students must register at least 30 minutes before their assigned time.
4) Each student should be ready and willing to play on time so we can keep the schedule going.
5) No students are to play instruments in the hallways, commons area, or any other site not designated as warm-up, or audition room. We are guests at Kennedy Middle School, and should conduct ourselves accordingly.
6) Students are not allowed to speak to judges at all! If any communication is to be made it should be whispered to the room monitor and transferred to the judges. Any student who speaks out loud to the judges will be disqualified from the audition. The judges will be behind “screens”, so the auditioning student should not be able to see the judges.
7) Judges should not speak to the students other than giving the instructions. No prompting, coaching etc. should be taking place in the audition room. Simply give the instructions and fairly score the student.
8) Students should be prepared to have all required scales memorized in the audition order. Each student is responsible for having all of the audition materials with them. No music will be provided or copied at the site.
9) Students will receive the results as soon as possible after the auditions. Please do not call or e-mail.
10) Students are allowed to audition on one instrument only.
*MIDDLE SCHOOL: Auditions will not be heard for piccolo, contra-bass clarinet, contra-alto clarinet, or alto clarinet. Students interested in low clarinet should audition on bass clarinet. Piccolo will be auditioned from the selected flute section at the first rehearsal if there is a need.
*HIGH SCHOOL: Auditions will not be heard for piccolo, Eb clarinet, or alto clarinet. Piccolo and Eb clarinet will be auditioned from the selected section at the first rehearsal.
11) PLEASE NOTE: HS Flute, MS flute, HS Bb Clarinet, HS saxes, HS percussion, and HS trumpet auditions will take place in TWO rooms this year. Students will play their scales and solo in room A, and will then be escorted to room B for sight-reading. Please prepare your students for this setup.
12) REMEMBER: Students must be prepared to play ALL of their prepared exercise, but cuts may be made in the prepared exercise in some audition rooms. A marked copy of the prepared exercise will be available for the student to see where to start and stop, however, students may still use their own music during the audition.
13) Judges should have all of their audition forms averaged and put into order from highest to lowest scores at the end of the audition. All packages should be turned directly in to Da-Laine Chapman before leaving that evening.
14) Each judge should bring a calculator, pencils, a sweater or jacket, snacks, etc. Also, each judging room is responsible for bringing their own bed-sheet (any size) and two music stands to create the screen in their room. Clothespins will be provided. Feel free to get together with the other director in your room to decide who is going to bring these items. If a director is scheduled to judge with a non-band director or someone from out of ocounty, the director is responsible for bringing all items.
15) Auditions begin at 4:45 p.m. for most rooms; the HS flute, HS clarinet, and HS trumpet rooms will begin at 4:30 p.m.
16) Judges, There will be a mandatory director’s meeting in the Kennedy Bandroom promptly at 4:00 p.m. Please make arrangements to leave your school early so you can be present at this meeting. Da-Laine Chapman will contact your principals with this request. ALL AUDITION ROOMS MUST BEGIN ON TIME. All directors must be involved in the audition process. NO EXCEPTIONS!!
17) MAKE SURE YOU ENTER THE SCHOOL AT THE SOUTH DOOR NEAR THE BAND/CHORUS ROOM as requested by the Kennedy administration. We are guests in the school, and if we want to be welcomed in the future, we must respect the school rules.

Feel free to e-mail me if you have questions or concerns!!
Thank you!!

CBHS Marching Band 70's Show Disco Ball

Photos: 1. Covered Disco Ball. Standing on left - Dale Vicos (face hidden), Dale Mosher, Dave Guseman. On ladder, Rick Hester. Photo 2. uncovered disco ball.
(Click on photos to see larger version).

Our outstanding Cocoa Beach HS Marching Band "70's" Show this year was enhanced by the huge "Disco Ball."

This Ball was custom made by a group of dedicated parents. I asked for details from the group facilitator, Dale Mosher. Dale generously invested many personal hours on this challenging project.

This is what Dale shared with me:
" Well, it all starts with Rick Hester. Rick was the one that came up with the idea to use ten foot sticks of PVC to form the skeleton.

Dale Vicos came up with the idea that I needed to put a motor up by the ball rather than using a drill and a long drive shaft from the bottom. Dale also deserves credit for working through the assembly process with me.

Don Cohen was the one that determined that we needed to use an 11 inch bearing and 15 inch hubs with double brackets. Don purchased the new bearing and also came over and helped make the new hubs.

Marley Cohen came over and made a pattern from a few looks and measurements, then she went home and brought back the perfectly fitting cover we have. She also made us a 70s case for the cover.

Sandy Vicos painted the shell...twice....and has even agreed to touch them up after the next game.

But another unsung hero in all this is Dave Guseman. Dave has provided me with feedback from an engineering perspective, void of personal opinion and bias. Dave quietly worked many of the fixes to overcomes the shortfalls.

Dale and everyone else, thank you for all of your hard work and dedication to Band Program!

CBHS Band Cheesecake & Coffee Fundraiser is Here!!

Cocoa Beach JrSr High School Band's Carberry's Gourmet Cheesecake and Coastal Coffee Fundraiser!

This delicious, high-quality, 9 inch cheesecakes are made to order locally in Merritt Island and sell for $11.95 each. Your child had the opportunity to taste them today in class. The fresh roasted coffee is the same delicious coffee sold at Juice and Java in Cocoa Beach, is packaged in ¼ pound holiday foil bags, and sells for $6. Both products are great for gifts.

All paper work and order forms went home with your child today. Please check the backs and lockers!

This fundraiser runs from October 17th through November 1st. Delivery is scheduled for November 15th in the Cafeteria. All orders must be prepaid. Checks are made out to CBHS. Your child's orders can be picked up in the school cafeteria on November 15th after school until 4:30 pm. Please make arrangements to pick up the order if it can not be easily transported on the bus since storage is limited at the school depending on the size of your order.

In the event of a tie, total sales of both products will serve as a tie breaker. Funds for this huge fundraiser will be used to purchase music for our entire music program in all of Mr. Brooker's classes. Our goal is $2,500 dollars, (music is expensive). Please encourage your child and support this fundraiser.
